"We focus not on risks but on resources and how to improve them. We apply positive communication to see the best, not the worst. We lead women back to their body and self-knowledge, we use physiological interventions in case of need without any side effects, we improve normal birth also with physiological hypoalgesia.”
Verena Schmid
The mainstream obstetric culture, based on routinary biases and fear rather than on scientific evidence, is in a strong contrast with midwives’ feelings and intuition; it is also in contrast with women’s and it turns out to be specifically in contrast with physiological processes.
The two texts published here offers tools for a change in care through a paradigm shift. A salutogenic, holistic approach is closer to women’s and babies’ real needs and health resources, acknowledging their natural competences. This new paradigm is also more effective in terms of health’s outcomes.

The Essence of Childbirth - Life Journeys and Resources
The Essence of Childbirth, a bestseller in Italy since 18 years, is aimed to women and their partners, but also to midwives who want to explain physiological resources to women. It narrates the potential residing in the birth experience, a potential that every woman has the power to activate, the symbolic value of the processes of life that are inherent in the journey through pregnancy, birthing and breastfeeding, the emotional and transformative journey of woman and baby, the extraordinary life force that manifests itself within them and also in the father, their multiple resources. This book restores the women’s importance and centrality in the whole process of maternity, guides them from within and supports them in their very personal choices.
